How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening is a simple, fast and non invasive cosmetic treatment producing immediate visible results.

With the use of modern technology, the combination of the specially formulated whitening gel and the Beyond Whitening accelerator, years of tooth staining can be wiped away in just 36 minutes.

Laser teeth whitening is the fastest and safest way to whiten teeth and causes no damage to either the structure of the tooth or the gums.

Oxygen is the only thing that can actually whiten your teeth. 99% of tooth whitening products do not whiten your teeth, they merely clean them. It is a common mistake to confuse whitening your teeth with a process that only cleans your teeth.

The structure of the tooth and how staining occurs.

The outermost part of your teeth consists of a translucent layer of highly ordered hydroxyapatite, a mineral made up of calcium phosphate. This protective layer known as the enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body. Underneath it lies the dentine, an off-white matrix of amorphous calcium phosphate and collagen that surrounds the blood vessels and nerves that nourish your teeth. Light passing through the enamel (dentine tubes) is reflected by the dentine, giving your teeth their pearly white colour.

There are two types of staining - Extrinsic staining ( basically dirt on the outside of the enamel which can be treated with a good whitening toothpaste) and Intrinsic staining ( through time the coloured molecules and dark pigments found in various foods, drinks and cigarettes, etc, penetrate through the enamel staining deep into the dentine tubes and staining the actual dentine of the tooth.

It is this process that gives your tooth a yellow/brown hue.

The science behind laser teeth whitening is not as complex as you may think; in fact the procedure is very simple. The whitening gel with a neutral pH level is placed on to the surface of your teeth, the gel has a special formulated mineral accelerant that when exposed to the specially tuned frequency of light provided by the cold laser light creates a chemical reaction with in the gel turning the whitening gel into oxygen at a high rate. As the gel turns into oxygen it opens the pores in the enamel of your teeth allowing the whitening gel to penetrate through the dentine tubes and into the dentine of your tooth, thus actually changing the colour of your teeth into a bright natural white.

Is it damaging to my teeth?

The simple answer is not at all. Acid and acid alone damages the gums or the structure of a tooth.

Research has shown that the system and the gels we use have been proven to actually be good for your teeth. The whitening gel being used is non-acidic and its pH level perfectly matches the natural pH level of your saliva. The system is filtered to remove the heat and harmful frequencies of light such as Ultra Violet and Infra Red light.

The Results

We have found after whitening thousands of people's teeth, results of between 5-14 shades whiter within the 36 minute treatment can be expected. The average is 8 shades whiter using the Vita shade guide.

However the type of staining is a large factor, for example severe staining from a lifestyle of consuming too many cigarettes and red wine, etc, you can expect the greatest results. With tetracycline staining, the first treatment may only achieve 3 or 4 shades whiter. If your teeth are already fairly white, then 3 or 4 shades is to be also expected or as white as your teeth can naturally go.

Also age is a factor in how white your teeth will go. As you grow older the mineral content of your teeth diminishes which governs how white your teeth will go.

All teeth are different, genetics too play a large role, some people have a great mineral content in their teeth allowing the tooth to go very white where as another person's teeth will not go as white even though they both have a very similar diet and age.

Please note natural teeth will only go so white, if you want teeth that are as white as some of the movie stars in magazines, then you do not want your teeth whitened, you want expensive veneers!

Advanced Laser Teeth Whitening Appointment

The appointment will last approximately 1 hour.

During this time your teeth technician will ask you to outline your dental history/health and in partnership with you, decide if the cosmetic treatment is indeed suitable. You will then be asked to sign a client consultation form.

Using the VITA shade guide your current tooth shade will be recorded.

The treatment itself consists of three 12-minute sessions, giving a total of 36 minutes. The treatment room will have scented candles complimented by soothing music being played to provide you with a relaxing experience.

Post treatment includes your new whiter tooth shade being recorded. The technician will also give you post procedure advice.
